Sicky Nathan

Sicky Nathan

The last week has sure been a crazy one. One that has been filled with much emotion, frustration, and determination...and once in a while, much needed laughter. It started with a small sore just above Nathan's lip on the right side of his face, it continued to grow, and eventually the entire right side of his face was swollen, hugely swollen. Nathan woke me up at 5:00 am Tuesday morning with a very scary, swollen face.

We just about went to the Emergency Room right then and there, but decided to call a 24 hour nurse hotline instead. She wasn't incredibly helpful, but told us to call back if he had any sweats or chills or if the swelling became worse. Nathan convinced me that we could try to go back to bed and go to the doctor when his office opened. We eventually did go to the doctor and the look on the doctors face was not comforting at all, he looked scared and told us that we needed to go to the Emergency Room. He did some examination and decided that it would be okay to just treat him in his office. Nathan was lucky enough to get a 2 gram shot of antibiotics, 1 gram in each bum cheek. The needle was thick and scary looking. The nurse was telling Nathan how bad the shot was going to be, we thought she was referring to the needle. Nope. "That wasn't bad at all." Was what Nathan told me, then he sat down, about 2 seconds later he starting rolling around in his seat "It burns!" Apparently the nurse meant that the antibiotics were going to hurt, not the shot. We went home and I went to work making Nathan swear that if anything were to change, whether good or bad, he were to call me. Nathan called me at 9:30 pm telling me that the doctor had called and told Nathan that he should go to the Emergency Room. I hurried and ran home. We talked to and called people for opinions and finally took Nathan to the Emergency Room at 12:00 am. The Emergency Room was incredibly pointless. The doctor told us that he didn't think that Nathan had given the antibiotics enough of a chance. (Nathan had seen a different doctor on Monday than he did on Tuesday that prescribed him an oral antibiotic) Nathan had been on antibiotics for almost 48 hours. I think that's plenty of a chance to give antibiotics when your brain is at risk, that's just me though. The Emergency Room doctor also told us to put heat on his staph infection, then he continued to repeat these two things to us over and over again lasting about 20 minutes. What a waist. I don't ever want to go to the Emergency Room again, it was just too pointless. Nathans swelling has gone down quite a bit and is doing better. We're extremely happy that this is going the direction it is. The other direction could have been filled with even more emotion, frustration, and hopefully much much more determination, but we won't think of what could have happened. We are grateful for what is happening. Thank you for all of the prayers and thoughts that came our way, we appreciate all of you.
